“Stay cool this summer”: LEAP (Local Energy Alliance Program) assists in energy efficiency solutions to reduce energy and sustainability costs in homes. People of a specific income and age may qualify for free energy efficiency upgrades, such as attic insulation and lightbulb replacements. Small businesses make up 45% of the United States’s economy. To make this important sector more sustainable in the Charlottesville area, Coles Jennings and C3 are giving $20,000 grants to improve small businesses’ energy efficiency. Livable Cville is a volunteer organization dedicated to ending the affordable housing crisis in Charlottesville. Co-Chair Matthew Gillikin is working with other volunteers to advocate for more affordable housing laws. Epsilon Eta is one of UVA’s newest fraternities, but instead of concentrating around social life, Epsilon Eta (EH) is sustainability oriented. Yes, EH does host social events, such as their upcoming camping trip to Shenandoah, but they also just hosted a bake sale fundraising for Charlottesville’s Green Youth Foundation. Charlottesville has officially expanded its sustainability program beyond Public Works! Cville's new Office of Sustainability is now spearheaded by Emily Irvine and two other constituents. They hope to reduce Charlottesville’s emissions by 45% by 2030 and be carbon neutral by 2050. This Women’s History Month, the Office of Sustainability is teaming up with the county's Office of Equity-Inclusion and Climate Program for a women’s community read! Caetano de Campos Lopes with C3 believes the City of Charlottesville is taking the next steps of transitioning to a zero emission bus fleet very seriously. The City hopes to double its bus fleet within the next decade. Lopes encourages all community members to attend the City Council meeting next week to promote the new buses. Charlottesville Transit Zero-Emission Initiative

Executive Director Susan Kruse shares information about the state of public transit in Charlottesville, and what actions C3 recommends as the city aims to meet its transit and climate goals. C3 Delivers Climate Action Kits to Students

Charlottesville’s First Climate Mural

In this week’s conversation, Susan discusses the unveiling of Charlottesville’s first-ever Climate Justice Mural which is on display on the side of the American Red Cross Building (1105 Rose Hill Drive). Over the summer C3 teens, students from the Boys and Girls Club, and other community partners worked together to complete the mural. The final product is an artistic demonstration of how climate change will impact our community in the future.
